“As the water rises, the evil is vanishing from the lake… Link, you did it!” - Sheik, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Inspiration

In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Link sleeps for seven years and wakes up to find the world changed because of Ganondorf’s evil power. One of the changes caused by Ganondorf is that Zora’s Domain freezes! The water in the area became ice and it caused Lake Hylia to drain. To make a drink inspired by Lake Hylia, I chose to make something like a slushy because they are also icy.  In reference to the tropical flavors present in the alcoholic version of this drink, Lake Hylia has some passion fruit puree. To boost it, we add some ‘Cool Blue’ Gatorade to make it sweeter, then elderflower tonic to balance it with some bitter bubbles. Almost like the bubbles you’d find underwater.

Workshopping

I wanted to try making another non-alcoholic version of a drink I made while playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Recently, a lot of people around my age are avoiding alcohol since it’s kind of bad for you. Alcohol is a poison. So I’m making sure to make non-alcoholic or low-alcohol drinks more often. Some people like it, and some people don’t. I think it is something I can learn from as a person who makes drinks. So I’ll try to do more of this.

Like for the Death Mountain Mocktail, I made this mocktail based on the recipe of the alcoholic one. The one with alcohol uses a bottle of Hpnotiq, which kind of tastes like passion fruit, mango, and pineapple to me. I have some frozen passion fruit puree which is yellow and sour, and I mixed it with some ‘Cool Blue’ Gatorade since it is blue but also tropical tasting. I’m not sure what the ‘Cool Blue’ Gatorade tastes like exactly, but it goes really well with the passion fruit.

Just like the other drink, this one is blended with a lot of ice so that it is almost like a snow cone. The other recipe also uses an alcoholic ingredient flavored with elderflower. Luckily, I have some tonic water that is also elderflower flavored. It is a bit bitter but has a lot of bubbles just like soda does. All together, I was able to make a drink like the original. The color is a bit more green because my passion fruit puree is yellow. 😅 I bet I can figure out a way to make it less green and more blue, but I haven’t figured it out just yet!

Flavor Analysis

Tastes like sour passionfruit with a bit of fizzy bitterness.
