“Dad said that Ganondorf has revived Volvagia…” - Darunia’s on Link, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Inspiration
The rock-eating Gorons live in an active volcano called Death Mountain. To make a drink inspired by their home, I wanted to eat some rocks as well. How’d I do that? With the candy recipe down below! Because volcanoes have hot lava in them, I wanted the drink on top of the rocks to look a bit like lava too. Lava is red, and so are strawberries so I made the drink taste like strawberries and chocolate because I love the way they taste together. To make this drink a bit like eating an actual rock (which doesn’t sound super tasty) I added some sorghum syrup as well, which is kind of like molasses. Volcanos erupt too, so I put soda water on top of the drink to make it a bit like an eruption!
How I Made It
Edible Rocks
As mentioned in our blog post on the alcoholic version of this drink, the edible chocolate rocks here are called Kohakutou. They’re a Japanese candy made with agar agar, a powder that comes from algae. They are crunchy on the outside and like jelly on the inside. On their own, they taste really good!
I followed a recipe from HANSE on YouTube, which goes something like this:
To a pot, add 5 g Cocoa Powder, 4 g Agar Agar Powder, 190 ml Water and 250 g Sugar.
Turn up the heat until it almost boils. Turn off the heat and store in a container in the fridge for one night.
The next day, the liquid should turn to jello! Cut the jello into squares and leave on a plate outside of the fridge until the outside of the squares become hard.
Death by Chocolate
I wanted this drink to have the same flavors that the alcoholic version does but with no alcohol at all. That recipe also uses chocolate and strawberry and an alcoholic liquid called rum. The rum in this case sort of tastes like bitter caramel and molasses, so I wanted this version to use those flavors too. I didn’t use caramel, because I had cocoa powder, chocolate rocks, and strawberries already. If I added more caramel, then the drink would be too sweet!
The drink is sweet already, so adding some lime juice adds just enough sourness to balance out the sweetness. The sorghum syrup, like molasses, is very thick and doesn’t mix very well. So we have to shake this really well. When shaking, don’t add the chocolate rocks or the soda water. The chocolate rocks will get crushed before you eat them, and the soda water might explode!
When you’re done shaking, add the chocolate rocks and small ice to a cup and pour the liquid over the ice. Add the soda water on top carefully, because the drink will fizz up a lot! This happens because the cocoa powder is really small and brings out the bubbles in the soda really quickly.
How it Tastes
This drink tastes like fizzy strawberry and a little bit like chocolate. It is a little bitter, but the sweet chocolate rocks on the bottom make up for a bit of bitterness along the way.
