“I’ll tell you something interesting about the desert that I overheard the Gerudos talking about. They said, “In order to cross the Haunted Wasteland, you’ll need the ‘eye of truth.’ “ - Shiro, The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
Inspiration
The XBar’s first official cocktail collaboration brought forth drinks inspired by The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. Among the inspired drinks is the Gerudo Valley, a riff on the margarita shaken with ice by the pair of mixologists over at the Mixology Mixshow! Their desert-themed drink combines the smokey characteristics of mezcal with cooling watermelon juice, a combination that I wasn’t prepared to love as much as I did. I have a feeling that this creation was meant to be a local margarita variation using locally foraged hydromelons found in the Gerudo Desert. Not that I would recommend hydrating yourself with a cocktail in the blistering dryness, but this would certainly keep your temperature in check if your found yourself making your way to the Gerudo Fortress on foot.
Flavor Analysis
Smoky mezcal dominates the flavor of this melon-ed margarita riff. The mid-palate fades to a lighter, more diluted flavor of smoke that peaks away to a light and fruity watermelon taste. The smoke lingers around on the end and fades to notes that are more vegetal than sweet (in a good way, a very good way).
