Our yellow pick for color-coded cocktails, as a requirement, used yellow chartreuse as one of its ingredients. The Yellow Jacket is one that I've had my eye on for a while, and now that our benefactors have bestowed upon us this bountiful bottle of botanical goodness, we were finally able to mix it up!
This cocktail comes from Jason Kosmas and Dushan Zaric of the Employees Only bar in New York City. It's evidently a concoction of well-established proportions since the recipe I had for it specified that it needed to be stirred for 40 revolutions...
Among other interesting points is that it also calls specifically for aged Reposado tequila. That point there is why I was really excited to try it, because that combo of Reposado and chartreuse is a flavor mix that I had yet to sample. My first sip was so full of a sweetness comprised of elderflower, licorice and honey, and split second later, it began to gradually fade to residual notes of menthol, agave, and vanilla.
I'd say that overall, this cocktail occupies the same slice of my brain that other classic cocktails do because of their complexity. I find that a lot of classics for me, remain to be so because they're so much fun to drink! Those drinks, the Manhattan, the Negroni, the Daiquiri, and evidently this Yellow Jacket, evolve over time, and each passing moment is a like a scene out of the window on a highway drive: each moment a scene of complexity that flickers into something different in sometimes familiar or unfamiliar ways.
