My own contribution for our Summer Drink Runway is a Piña Colada! Many attempt have been made to create a colada that triumphs above all else. And I was curious if the best Piña Colada out there could contend in the running.


According to Punch Drink, the best blended pineapple coconut beverage is upgraded to "superior" status with the help of this "One Neat Trick for Cooler Coladas"!

Adding a couple of coffee beans to your blender gives the slightest modification with a noticeable effect on both the taste and texture of the final product. In your average Piña Colada, the beans provide an almost exfoliating feeling on your tongue that's accompanied by a touch of bitterness.


The late bartender John Lermayer, co-founder of Sweet Liberty in Miami Beach took this improvement a step further by introducing a particular blend of rums and a final float of dry red sherry! This combination I found to be one of the sweetest and well-rounded coladas that I've had in a while. And it's sweet in that way that's appreciable: not overpowering, properly boozy, and atypically textured.


Piña Colada's in general hit me right in my summer nostalgia. But this endeavor takes a lot to mix right. Is the blend worth the time? Or is this Summer Drink contender too drawn-out to be.

Sweet Liberty Pina Colada

Sweet Liberty Pina Colada

  • 1.5 oz (44 ml) Rum Blend*
  • 1 oz (30 ml) Pineapple Juice (Dole)
  • 3/5 oz (17 ml) Cream of Coconut
  • 2/5 oz (12 ml) Coconut Milk/Water
  • 2 Whole Coffee Beans
  • 1 1-inch Pineapple Chunk
  • Layered 1/4 oz (7 ml) Dry Sherry (Taylor, Pedro Ximénez recommended)

Method: Blend, Pour then Layer

Garnish: Mint, Cherry & Parasol
