I would say that I am a lover of poetry. I can't say that I'm very good at reading, nor am I that proficient at writing it. However, there are a number of poets and writers whose works I will one day sit down to savor. One such artist whose pieces of prose remain to be a topic of discussion is Sappho from Lesbos. Referred to in some contexts as the 10th Muse, much of her poetry was meant to be sung to.

I find it unfortunate that much of her work only survives in fragments, but there's a sort of mystique surrounding that which I feel enhances their allure. Much of it can be up to our own interpretation, combining a piece of ourselves with a piece of the original author. Kind of an across-time sort of collaboration. That's pretty cool!

The cocktail so inspired by Sappho is as pleasing as some of her lyrics. A lovely, balanced drink with that perfect dance between tart and sweet, with just enough bitter (just a touch) to accent all of the other flavors. The use of the white rum here has notes of powdered white sugar which complement the fructose-forward agave syrup. That Campari + lime juice combo is one I've never had before, and I am definitely going to take note of that!

Garnishing the drink with that rose bud/petal ice cube is also a really nice touch. There's something sort of serene about it. I think that's a nice metaphor for poetry and prose in general.

Sappho’s Lesbian Libation

1 1/2 oz (44 ml) White Rum (Bacardi, but Denizen 3-Year-Old recommended)
3/4 oz (22 ml) Lime Juice
1/2 oz (15 ml) Agave Syrup
1/4 oz (7 ml) Bitter Liqueur (Campari, but Carpano Botanic Bitter recommended)

Method: Shake & Strain

Garnish: Rose Bud Cube

Notes: To prepare this cocktail, first freeze one half of a large ice cube. Add rose petals or a rose bud, and then fill up the rest of the mold. Freezing the cube in two parts allows us to put something inside of it!
