Inspiration

Powerline is likely the best-known animated Disney pop star who starred in the 1995 film A Goofy Movie. One of his performances in the movie is co-opted by Goofy and his son Max Goof. During the show, Goofy strikes his signature dance move, “the perfect cast” which Powerline improvises into his routine, thereby saving the performance and rocking it in the process. Powerline’s signature non-alcoholic beverage, the PowerLIME is sour, vibrant green, and sweetened with a fishy syrup in reference to “the perfect cast”.

Workshopping

Powerline? More like POWER - LIME!

A Goofy Movie is a wacky trip into our childhood. Thus, a mocktail that was based mostly on lime flavors was a must. The goofy pop star’s name also was a prime opportunity to do another pun-based drink! The dude’s name sounds like power-lime so we were determined to mix a drink with lime-flavored PowerAid. On its own, the lemon-lime PowerAid is a light flavor that seemed best as an accent. Adding a bit of lime juice amplified those citrus flavors to be more prominent, and throwing some green food dye helped match Powerline’s outfit. More on why I opted for food dye up next.

The Perfect Cast

Goofy loves fishing and the drink was too sour at this point. We needed that reference to the Goofy movie and we needed something sweet. Swedish Fish was our answer. They’re shaped like fish and have a unique flavor of some red berry (allegedly lingonberry to be precise).  There were only two issues with using Swedish Fish as an ingredient. First of all, they are a very waxy candy. They contain a large proportion of carnauba wax, which doesn’t make for a very nice syrup. Secondly, they are bright red.

I’ve never made a Swedish Fish syrup before, so I tried my hand at going the simple route. Melt the Swedish Fish in equal parts water and stir until liquid. I was not playing my patience card well enough because as I stirred and stirred this mix, it had boiled off all the water before the candy had melted. In response, I added another measure of water. This process repeated about three times until I gave up and bottled a very chunky and pink mixture of “Swedish Fish syrup”. To be honest, it wasn’t much syrup as it was a sort of edible slime. It tasted wonderful though, and double-straining the drink kept most of the “pulp” behind.

Lucky for us, fixing the color was a matter of adding more food dye. The drink was mostly artificial dyes from the Swedish Fish and PowerAid already, so I didn’t feel as averse as I normally would about added colors. To complete the perfect cast though, we made a garnish by tying a Swedish Fish with some twine to a toothpick, and went a-fishin’. It was a bit of an outrageous combination, but it was pleasing to taste for my co-hosts who prefer sour drinks.

Cheese Chaser?

Although not required in the least bit, we’d like to inform you that you may chase this drink with cheese from a can and crackers. Yet another reference to A Goofy Movie, Bobby Zimuruski’s leaning tower of cheeza does make a pretty nice pair to this sour and waxy beverage. The salty and creamy mass of yellow dairy wasn’t quite unpleasant. Honestly, I think the salt was the best part. We might have just been dehydrated though since we had been livestreaming for charity for about five and a half hours at this point.

Flavor Analysis

A sour base that feels like a sour candy rush through your taste buds. Sour lime flavors blend with a generic red berry sweetness and leave your palette a bit dry. If you chased with liquid cheese and salty crackers, then the waxy dryness is mitigated a bit.
