The story goes that the Underworld god, Hades, stole Persephone from the land of the living as she was picking flowers. Upon doing so, the world fell into a great cold, a deep slumber of cool and chill. That was Fall and then Winter. While in the depths, Hades coerced Persephone to remain there as his bride. Allegedly, Hades made Persephone consume the seeds of a pomegranate, setting in stone her chains to the land of the dead. Luckily ever so, Persephone was allowed to return to the surface for 6 months out of the year. That would be Spring, and then Summer.
The theme of the seasons here is such a fun one to play around with! I love how this interpretation uses the warming flavors of pomegranate and tequila that allude to Spring and Summer. Although the original recipe called for pickled cherry blossoms, the substitution I made with rose petals really gives that 'falling leaves' vibe of Fall and Autumn.
I'm also amazed at how this tastes. The pomegranate liqueur that I used has tequila as its base spirit, and it naturally complements the reposado. There's also this note of smokiness to it that may be coming from the reposado, the underlying tones of the liqueur, or the fact that Canada is on fire during the time of this writing. Honestly, margaritas have never really been my go-to unless they have some fruity component to it, and if I had to pick a new favorite riff going forward, it would be with that prominent pomegranate!
