For me, my journey with cocktail journey with Chartreuse begins at the end. My first sip on one being a Last Word (honestly feels a bit punny, and I love that).
Evidently, cocktails have a bit of a family tree, and like a Negroni which falls in the 3-ingredient branch of that progeny, the Last Word hangs on the 4-ingredient branch. The familial relations of cocktails is something I'd like to explore at some point.
What shocked me most about this drink was the prominent flavor of the maraschino shining through compared to the strengthy chartreuse. I want to say that the flavors of herb, cherry, anise, and lime however, there were clearly some pieces that played the main character, and some that played a side role.
I don't discredit the Chartreuse here for taking the support role here, because it buttressed everything else so well. Anise + cherry, lime + peppercorn, juniper + botanical bitterness. If Chartreuse were a minor side character in a blockbuster film, it'd be the one that has its own subreddit dedicated to it. "Your stage presence was palatable, Left Shark"
