A number of bitters bottles in my collection are all made in small batches, like those from the Bitter Housewife. There's a piece of me that feels almost luxurious when I know that the bottle I have is small because there's, relatively speaking, not much of it out there. Maybe it's a marketing thing, but it makes me feel special, and you won't hear any complaints from me about that!
I believe I procured these grapefruit bitters for a specific use case, but what that use case was is beyond my grasp of remembrance as of right now. Anyways, giving these bitters a smell, I was greeted with a prevalent alcohol odor. Giving it a taste, I was a little disappointed that it wasn't as prominently grapefruity as I had hoped it would be. If I had to pick a citrus to label this as I would only pick grapefruit by process of elimination. To me, it doesn't have much of that sweet-tartness that a grapefruit does. What's interesting is that I associate the flavor I get as being more like watery vegetables, like a cucumber!
I was so inspired by the association with cucumber that I was getting, that I had to spin up a cocktail with it! The bitter housewife provided an old-fashioned recipe with gin that I modified to use some cucumber-jalapeño tequila. T'was nicely balanced, and those bitters really helped on flavor!!
Another note I want to add is all the other bitters that bitter housewife makes. A number of those flavors look really interesting, and one day I'd like to try them all! (Bitters of note: chicory, hazelnut, orange, lime coriander, cardamom, old fashioned)
