A pink bowl of gay goodness with a flamboyant orange peel clearly about to take a dip.
A light blue tropical drink cartoon with a straw and a citrus wheel

When conducting my research on pride cocktails, one in particular floated it's way to the top, the Cosmopolitan! Evidently the true origin of this iconic drink is hotly debated. Some folks claim to have created it, some folks claim to know who had created it and knew for sure it wasn't them! It was definitely one or more of the following options:

  • A riff on some other drink (Kamikaze, Brandy Daisy, Cape Codder, Other...)

  • A creation of the gay community in Provincetown, Massachusetts

  • Popularized by Sex and the City

  • Some freak accident in a chem lab that went right

The world may never know for sure.

What the Cosmo does well is manifold. I've never had a cosmopolitan before this stream and I can honestly say that I'm perplexed! I'm not a fan of sour-forward drinks, but this is pleasing to me. The Cointreau adds this orange juice and vanilla note that combines with the tart cranberry and sour lime to form a new flavor all its own. If someone handed me this Cosmo and asked me what citrus was in it, I'd guess lemon for some reason. It's got my palate that surprised!

I'm intensely curious about how other bars out there make their own Cosmopolitans since I'm getting the impression that they can now vary almost as widely as individual personalities can!
