One of the other aspects of pride that I really wanted to emphasize was the people, obviously! Being a cocktail creator myself, I naturally look towards others who are also mixological artists. Dare I say that one of the geniuses that I follow has helped me come to a myriad of realizations when it's come to cocktail craft.
I was really inspired by Mike Vander Horn's work after listening to a podcast that had him on as a guest. He detailed his story of going from at-home mixologist to head bartender at a bar not too far from my own homestead. I've yet to pay a visit, but I absolutely intend to! One of the points he detailed was about going out there and testing your skills in the wild like at cocktail competitions. I've entered a couple now after this experience and it gives me the determination to hone my craft better and learn all there is to know (especially from the folks who've done it first).
I saw Mike's take on a mojito, but instead using a Brazilian cachaça by Leblon. I was stoked because this is literally the only one I could find at my liquor store and I freaking love it! Combined with everything else, this cocktail was probably the bast damn mojito I've ever had! Call it a balanced blend between woody, minty, sweet, tangy, funky, boozy... or just call it good! It's a bit of a shame that I couldn't find the overproof white rum to perfectly match the recipe, but for something pretty darn close, I'm happy I tried it anyways!
If y'all are looking for a seriously good Drinkstagram follow, I highly encourage checking out Mike! I fine fellow and one of my favorite local inspirations!
